In his latest biography, “Bill Clinton: A Complicated Man” the writer, Michael Takiff points out that, while the former president helped end genocide in Bosnia, brought peace to Northern Ireland, and led his country through a time of peace and prosperity, he is still best remembered for his personal indiscretions.
Takiff believes that if you ask ordinary citizens what words they associate with individual leaders, here is what they’ll tell you:
For JFK: “Ask not what your country can do for you…”
For Ronald Regan: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall.”
For Bill Clinton: “I did not have sexual relations with that woman…”
Takiff claims that, when he’s done this survey during book signings, the crowds often shout out Clinton’s words right along with him…
A sobering thought: What words will others someday associate with us? My fear is some wise-guy will inscribe, “There’s an ap for that!” on my tombstone.
