Not a Phony

J.D. Salinger, who passed away yesterday at 91, will be forever known as the author of “The Catcher in the Rye. ” While he didn’t invent adolescent alienation, Salinger captured it in a way that has made high school boys smile knowingly for over half a century.

If “Huckleberry Finn” is the great coming of age novel of the 19th century, you can make the case for “Catcher” being the same for the 20th.
