The Curse of Cain

In “Raising Cain,” my all-time favourite book about boys, Michael Thompson makes the point that boys need approval, especially from their fathers, and when they don’t get this, they will act out unless they are taught how to “process out.” The story of Cain is the story of the first adolescent male’s inability to think through his impulses.  Cain was humiliated “yet he utters no words to express his feelings.”

Knowing that “How are you feeling?” is a conversation killer with many boys, we still need to figure out how we can help them develop their inner resources and the vocabulary they’ll need for self understanding.  The challenge is ours. Thompson points out that Cain’s parents, Adam and Eve, are noticeably absent from the story…
