If there is one thing that the recently departed Frank McCourt, author of “Angela’s Ashes,” “T’is,” and “Teacher Man,” came to understand, it’s that we write best what we know best.
As someone who too often assigned topics such as, “Write an essay about the significance of the green light in ‘The Great Gatsby,’ I came to learn — ever so slowly — that boys will write with great gusto if they believe they are writing about something meaningful.
A personal favourite: “Write about a time when you either demonstrated courage or became aware of your own profound lack of it.”
